Would You Like To Know More?

My wife and I are fans of the original, 1997 Starship Troopers film, and we're just about the only people I know who didn't loathe the first, direct-to-DVD sequel, Hero of the Federation. It wasn't very good, mind you, but we enjoyed it. Unfortunately, I haven't seen the animated Roughnecks series, though I've heard it's pretty good. And yes, I know, the novel by Robert Heinlein is vastly better, but the movie's such a great, goofy ride, that I love it.

Now, ten years after the first, they've finally made another Troopers flick, and Casper Van Dien is back as Johnny Rico, looking considerably more weathered. Hopefully, this one will be closer in tone to the original. The trailer looks promising, despite the presence of pretty-but-wooden Jolene Blaylock. Here's hoping.

I remember seeing the original in a theater and thinking that the tv news scenes with all the scrolling text and talking heads was input overload. Turn on any of the cable news channels today and that's what you see.

I never saw the sequel, but the trailer to the third one does look like fun. Maybe as the second feature on a Saturday night...

I really love the original Starship Troopers. Loved the book too, although it's really a different kind of story. Didn't see the sequel. But since the writer of the original, Ed Neumier, has written and directed this I'm hoping for more of the first film's tone, if not the scope.

The ROUGHNECKS series is really quite good, taking a surprisingly mature look at war for a Saturday Morning toon. And it does a nice job of following the film while also reincorporating elements of the novel (cut characters, robotic battle-suits, Skinnies). It's a shame the producers never got to make the final 5 episode arc, so things are a bit open-ended. Still, you should really check it out.
