This week, I've got one of my favorite Eduardo Barreto covers from the mid-90s Tekno•Comix series, Mickey Spillane's Mike Danger. Written by Max Allan Collins, and illustrated by Barreto, I have a special fondness for this series, as it was one of the monthly titles I edited during my tenure at the aforementioned Tekno. Based loosely on Mickey's original Mike Danger comics character from the 40's, this version had the Hammer-like gumshoe transported to a politically correct, Buck Rogers-styled future via cold sleep. It was a fun book, and a pleasure to work on.I also like this cover because Eduardo graciously gave me the original art as a gift, and it hangs proudly in my living room.

ReplyDeleteI never knew this existed. I bet I would like it, although I was not a particular fan of Mickey Spillane. I do enjoy the hardboiled genre, and mixing it with space opera sounds like a marriage made in heaven. Or somewhere.

ReplyDeleteThis was the second time I saw Barreto's art (first was Martian Manhunter: American Secrets), but I recognized it instantly. Bought the first issue just for that.

Picture Flash Gordon with a .38 and five o'clock shadow. Now imagine him pistol-whipping Ming the Merciless instead of trying to run him through with a sword. That's Mike Danger.
